What I’m Working on Now

This is stuff I’m working on at the moment. The distinctions between short, medium, and long term are mostly to do with distance to completion but also, to a lesser extent, immediate focus.

Short Term

  • building out the Scaife Viewer online reading framework architecture (including support for displaying treebanks and translation alignment)
  • lemmatising the Apostolic Fathers (apostolic-fathers)
  • extracting information from Cunliffe’s Lexicon of the Homeric Dialect

Medium Term

  • putting together vocabulary lists for extensive reading
  • continuing to produce short instructional material (including videos) explaining little grammar topics (most recently a verb morpology tour and also an article on the first declension)
  • mapping various choices of lemmas in GNT (greek-lemma-mappings) and beyond (currently doing some clean up of LSJ headwords and also the Tyndale House lexicon)
  • finalising an improved set of morphology tags to use (see New Draft Morphological Tags for MorphGNT)
  • modelling accentuation to both test texts and rules: gnt-accentuation
  • extracting from lexicons principal parts, irregular forms, and other extant forms given as examples (beyond Cunliffe mentioned above)
  • experiments in vocabulary modeling and assessment at http://vocab.oxlos.org
  • extending the verb inflection modelling in greek-inflexion to cover the Nestle1904, LXX, and Apostolic Fathers
  • applying verb ending patterns to Logeion database for broader coverage
  • developing a database of principal parts
  • improving the nominal morphology support in greek-inflexion
  • extending morphology, lemmatisation, accentuation analysis to other (free) editions of GNT
  • continuing work on adaptive Greek reader (and other online learning tools)

Long Term

  • publishing a comprehensive morphological lexicon
  • publishing an executable grammar of Greek morphology
  • launching adaptive Greek reader and online learning tools
  • extending data to much larger range of Greek texts

By day I’m an entrepreneur, web technologist and open-source developer but my academic background is in linguistics (along with some classics, comparative philology, and educational statistics) and my main avocation is working on text, annotations, analysis and software relating to historical languages with a particular interest in facilitating better learning.

While my focus has mostly been on Biblical Greek, much of the work is highly relevant to other Hellenistic Greek texts, other dialects of Ancient Greek and, indeed, texts in completely different languages as well.

All code written for this endeavour is open source and text and data is made available under a Creative Commons license to the extent allowed by the sources used.
